Avenue of Pines

Avenue of Pines

This 46-mile northwoods route, which also cuts through Chippewa National Forest, features low-rolling hills covered in pine forests. It’s a popular area for fishing, with several resorts and campgrounds nearby. It borders Lake Winnibigoshish, the state’s fifth-largest lake, created when the Mississippi River was dammed in 1884. The Cut Foot Sioux Visitor Center provides details on fishing, camping, boating, hiking trails and bird watching in the area. Watch for eagles soaring overhead or perched high in trees along the shoreline of major lakes, such as Winnibigoshish and Squaw Lake.
